Who does not want to write at least a children's book in their life? I always wanted to give it a try. So, one day, I sat down and started jotting down ideas for a book I thought kids would find fun. I had started a business that created funny attitude sayings on children's apparel, so I had a leg up on "one-liners." As it turned out, Grandmas were our best customers, so why not create something with them in mind? After a few concepts floated through my head, I hit on the idea of the Grandmas doing all kinds of fun, silly, and out-of-the-ordinary activities. The catchphrase that would carry the theme was" But she could!" which the young reader could shout aloud after each wild activity.
So I wrote the activities, sketched out the art direction, and I was on my way to my first book, "My Grandma Could Do Anything!". There are many things to be considered even when writing a small picture book. Decisions about size, colors, how many pages, dialog, layout, etc. It sounds like a lot, but with willing friends to provide feedback, the process was fun and educational, and soon, I had my first finished children's book. I printed up 3,000 copies and started selling. The response was very positive, and I quickly ended up selling all 3,000 and ordered a second print run.
Based on the success of the book's concept, I decided to branch out and focus on specific geographic areas. This decision proved to be very fun and successful. Writing a kid's book in Hawaii and thinking of the beautiful ocean, landscapes, and people… what's not to love?!
Many books followed with themes including New York City, San Francisco, Colorado, the Beach, the Rocky Mountains, the Zoo, the Adirondacks, and Washington, D.C. I am still creating new themes to carry on this concept, as well as some new entertaining ideas for kids. I have been very fortunate and grateful for my book sales, which are well over 150,000 copies in print and counting. I'm in the business of creating smiles; I hope my books have done the trick.
I also hope my books will create special reading memories for you and your Grandchild.
Have Fun!
If you have made it this far in reading about me, I challenge you to give writing a children's book a try. You never know, "I bet you could!".
